Nonprofit Financial Solutions PC

R. Timothy Murphy, CPA, tim@nfspc.net

Tim began his career in public accounting with a firm specializing in serving religious nonprofit organizations, Capin Crouse, where he worked for over five years.  Tim served as the Controller for an Indiana trade association for two years.  After serving with a large regional CPA firm in 1997, he established Nonprofit Financial Solutions in 1998.

Nonprofit Financial Solutions provides financial management and operations management services for nonprofit organizations.  Tim has worked with a number of community foundations, faith-based organizations, churches, trade associations, and social service agencies.

2007 & 2008 have been years of "anywhere but home", not necessarily by design or desire to be away, but out of a desire to help organizations become more effective.

Tim spends a week each month in Birmingham, Alabama, serving a large urban church as a consultant, focused primarily on the effectiveness of their financial operations, improved financial reporting, and training staff.  This engagement has helped Tim's cross-cultural sensitivity, and has opened his eyes to the injustices of decades of segregation in our country.  This dynamic ministry is working to transform the region in which it serves, through exciting outreaches such as medical clinics, job training, food and clothing pantries, etc.  For more info, see www.worddome.net.

Another of Tim's "favorites" is a rescue mission (and a whole lot more) in Indianapolis.  As CFO for the organization, he helped integrate the financial activities resulting from a merger in September 2006 with another mission.  By critically looking at business processes, we've significantly streamlined the month-end reconciliation and reporting processes, and have developed new financial reports and management discussion of financial results so that the board of directors better understands the financial position of the ministry.  Because this ministry serves the homeless, addicted, and others less fortunate, Tim is reminded each visit of how blessed he is.  For more info, see www.wmm.org.

In July 2007, Tim began a project in Bloomington, Indiana, serving as CFO to a national association.  This project entailed implementation of a new chart of accounts and accounting system, preparation for annual audit, and the effective utilization of existing technology to improve business processes.  The timeline for month-end reconciliations and financial reporting has been reduced by more than 50%, resulting in significant cost savings for the organization.  For more info, see www.oah.org.

In 2006, Tim's practice included travel to Alabama and Missouri, but most of his work was in Indiana.  Tim worked with three Indianapolis ministries in a collaboration effort, finding ways to leverage resources for more effective service and stewardship.  Two of these organizations merged in 2007.  As well, he has served as the interim CFO for a cultural institution with a $10 million operating budget.

In 2005, Tim served clients in Indiana, Virginia, Maryland, Missouri, the District of Columbia, Connecticut, and Tanzania in East Africa.  Tim's travels included stops in London, Amsterdam, Nairobi, and Dar es Salaam.  Non-exotic stops included Baltimore, Philadelphia, Springfield (MO), Orlando, and Colorado Springs.

Tim has worked with a number of organizations that receive federal and state funding, and has been involved in the financial management and reporting of grants received via Health & Human Services, USAID, Department of State, and CNCS.  A regular part of Tim's continuing education includes courses that qualify under Yellow Book requirements.

Tim is an Indiana native and graduated Cum Laude from Taylor University in Upland, Indiana.  Tim has been licensed as a CPA in Indiana since 1994, and has been licensed to practice in Colorado, Minnesota, and Illinois.  Tim and his family are active at Grace Community Church in Noblesville, Indiana where he serves on the finance and audit committee.  Tim is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, the Indiana CPA Society, the Institute of Internal Auditors, and Christian Leadership Alliance.

Tim has been married for 18 years.  He and his wife Sharon have two daughters who are 12 and 9.  As a family, they enjoy outdoor activities, gardening, reading, and traveling.  Tim enjoys being at home, cycling, and camping.
